Frequently Asked Questions
What is sports massage?
As you might expect, sports massage uses deeper, more intense techniques than are used for relaxation alone. At Remediation Sports Massage Therapy, I ensure muscles are warmed up thoroughly to enable pliability for deeper tissue work. I then use a combination of long, flowing techniques with release, friction and trigger point manipulation techniques to help alleviate stress/tension that has built up within soft tissues as a result of physical activity, poor posture or general wear and tear. The techniques used are tailored to each individual client and their specific needs.
What are the benefits of sports massage?
Sports massage can help to improve muscle recovery, increase blood flow to specific areas, aid mobiliy and increase range of movement, reduce tension, and promote overall well-being. Massage can also help to reduce blood pressure, aid drainage of lymphatic fluid (waste) and speed up the body's natural healing process.
You may experience slight soreness or tenderness following treatment, particularly in areas where damage has occurred as a result of physical activity. This should subside within 72 hours after treatment.
Is sports massage suitable for non-athletes?
Yes, sports massage can be beneficial for anybody! Whether you are an athlete, involved in sports on a casual basis, have a physically demanding job, or experience emotional and postural stress (which often presents in a similar way to a sports injury), sports massage can help relieve muscle tension and stress, aid mobility, and improve wellbeing.
The level of pressure used is specific to your needs and desired treatment outcome... but if you just want to feel relaxed and unwind, I can definitely help with that too!
How often should I receive sports massage?
The frequency of sports massage depends on individual needs, but regular sessions can help maintain muscle health and prevent injuries. At your initial consultation, we will discuss a tailored treatment plan that carefully considers any issues you may be having and what you want to gain from treatment.
What should I do after treatments?
It is recommended that you drink plenty of water over the 24 hours following treatment. This is to help rehydrate you, flush any toxins out of the body and will aid recovery.
It is best to avoid alcohol and caffiene as these can influence treatment effectiveness. I would also recommend that you eat light. healthy meals following treatment to support the body's natural healing response to treatment.
Where possible, you should avoid exercise or heavy activity for up to 12 hours following treatment due to the body's need to heal. It is also recommended that you avoid excess heat (e.g., saunas, hot baths/showers).
It may be useful to make a note of how your body feels after treatment so that you can discuss this at your next appointment.
